Vinitaly/Verona 97 - Review

On the occasion of Vinitaly/Verona from April 4 to 8, Austrian wine was, as in 1995, greatly honored. In the "Concorso Enologico" two of the nine major prizes ("Gran Medaglia d'Oro") went to Austrian vintners.

The "Major Gold Medal" for white wines of the last two vintages was won by the Donabaum wine estate in Spitz for a 1995 Pinot blanc Spätlese. This and a "Gran Menzione" for a 1995 Riesling Smaragd also won the special prize for Austria's most successful wine estate in the competition. This was closely followed by Moorhof and the Unger family from St Margarethen, who in the category of "naturally sweet wines", with a 1995 Welschriesling TBA, also collected a major gold medal and received a "praiseworthy mention" for a 1995 Müller-Thurgau Ausbruch.

Additionally, there was again a gold medal for the Vorarlberg wine sellers Malin & Summer, three silver medals (Pfaffl, Stetten; Schönberger, St Marein; Markowitsch, Göttlesbrunn), one bronze medal (Mollner-Titz, Apetlon) and fifteen further "praiseworthy mentions".

The Sunday following was completely booked for an Austrian tasting with commentary, which the South Tyrol sommelier club "Gourmet's International" carried out on behalf of the AWM.

The AWM restaurant "Austria Imperialis" - which for the second time was excellently run by Hias Kucher from Carinthia - was also appropriately in demand as a welcome meeting place for the hungry wine experts, journalists and exhibitors.
