Heinrich Hartl III is a leading producer in Austria’s Thermenregion, bordering Vienna’s South. Terroir there shows many parallels to France’s Burgundy, though wines of top quality still meeting reasonable price points can be found. The Hartl’s 16 ha (40 acres) of vineyards are spread throughout the region, allowing the family to grow what works best in specific sites. Top red wines are mostly from Pinot noir and Sankt Laurent, while the white indigenous specialties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler convince with their elegant structure, complexity and ability to match rich and/or spicy dishes. These hidden gems from historic vineyards are true aces up every sommelier’s sleeve.
