Austria Uncorked Chicago: Cool Wines – Cool Location

The next stop for Austria's cool wines super-show took place in the hip event location Venue One, in Chicago's West Loop area. There were 200 sommeliers and trade pros on hand in the afternoon to declare their ever-growing enthusiasm for Grüner Veltliner & Co. Public attendance in the evening was a great success as well, with 400 tickets sold!

Six trendy restaurants from the West Loop neighborhood delivered culinary highlights and delights, including mini-steaks and spanferkel – delicious suckling pig. The AMA served up a spectacular cheese and ham buffet. And the sweet finale was taken care of by the one and only Julius Meinl, the same firm that, for many years, has been lending its disctictive Austrian accent to the “Windy City” with its original Viennese coffeehouse near the legendary Wrigley Field baseball stadium.

Part of the proceeds from the event were donated to a local charity. For this, a special raffle was held, with valuable prizes from the wine glassware company, Riedel, various winegrowers and KGNY (chef and restaurateur Kurt Gutenbrunner) presented to the lucky winners.

The "Austria Uncorked" format, with a professional wine tasting in the afternoon and an exciting public culinary event in the evening, has been a tremendous success, and will be fully implemented in the future - even in cities where the Austrian Wine Marketing Board has not yet made an appearance!
