Grüner Veltliner & Co in the Netherlands

Austrian wines are in fashion. To prove this statement, a special event is taking place in the Hotel Crown Plaza-Den Haag on March 7th. A total of 42 exhibitors will present an array of specialty wines to the Netherlands wine connoisseurs.

With 4 top quality harvests, the conditions for export and an ever-improving image are truly excellent. Success in the United States and Europe is due to importers who supply highly acclaimed top restaurants.

Many international wine magazines have portrayed the popularity of Austrian wines. The Wine Spectator, the most important American publication, Wine & Spirits and The Wine Enthusiast have all published enthusiatic articles about Austrian Vintners. In November, Austria was also featured in Parkers' The Wine Advocate as well as in leading wine magazines in the UK. In addition, Philipp Bloms' critically acclaimed book The Wines of Austria was published in March, 2000 by Faber & Faber.

The head of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, Mr Bertold Salomon, is very happy with the latest media response. "Our wines have never received as much critical acclaim as in the last year. More and more wine critics understand our terroir and praise types if indigenous vines like Grüner Veltliner or Zweigelt."

Export figures to Germany, the main market for Austrian wine, have more than doubled in the last two years. "We will not flood the market due to our limited production capacity." says Salomon. "However, more and more international wine connoisseurs consider us a valuable addition to the wine market. They enjoy the individuality of our dry white wines, the precise, deep fruit of our red wines and the lavishness and balance of our sweet dessert wines."
