Wenzl

About us

It is documentated that the ancestors of the Wenzl family settled in Matzen as the 16th century. They worked as cellarer for count Kinsky and were in his following when he immigrated to Matzen. In 1930 the last of the Kinskys sold his property in this area. One of the vineyards obtained in this transaction in the vineyard site of Philipsberg with the variety Grüner Veltliner - stock Riparia produced the wine for the first bottles filled in 1932. The stoke training wine tradition which existed for decades was changed to the high training system in 1935-1965 and resulted in a territorial expansion.

In this time varieties such as Frühroter Veltliner, Jubiläumsrebe, Bouvier and Gewürztraminer were the most in demand, however after 1973, Matzen has become best known as a producer of red wine.
