As early as 1452, Weingut Stadt Krems emerged from possessions of the Bürgerspitalstiftung. Accordingly, the company is one of the oldest existing wine estates in the world. Today, the winery is owned by the city and thus belongs to the citizens of Krems.

As a member of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter © (ÖTW) it is in the favor, to cultivate the most important single vineyards of Austria. All 40 hectares of vineyards lie within the city limits.

Historic vineyard sites such as Grillenparz, Schreck, Wachtberg und Weinzierlberg are the ideal soil for great wines. The focus for the grape varieties, as intended for the Kremstal DAC origin, is with Riesling and Grüner Veltliner.
