Organized for the first time in 1988, the SALON Austria Wine Awards have become the country's toughest wine competition and are considered the state championship of local wine.
To begin with, over 7,000 wines are impartially judged at a series of blind tastings, firstly at regional level. As is often the case, the SALON will discover new and up and coming producers, who can then profit from the publicity. In the final trophy tasting, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB) then announces the wines with the highest number of points per category as the SALON trophy winners. During the preliminary stages, renowned wine magazines and acknowledged journalists and sommeliers give their favourite nominated wines, which account for up to 40 wines in the SALON. The producer with the most nominations is then put forward to the SALON selection. The SALON Austrian Wine Awards, is therefore not only the nation's hardest wine competition, but also offers a fascinating diversity of wines.
