Vines were cultivated for 700 years on the Atzberg up until the 1950s. It simply became uneconomical to practice viticulture on this extremely steep moutain slope. Many recognized the potential of the site, but all shied away from the difficult toil and financial risk that re-cultivating this 75% gradient slope posed. After a 50-year pause, Franz-Josef Gritsch brought vines back to the Atzberg in 2008. The imposing Atzberg now yields Gruener Veltliners that deeply impress with "Wachau soul". They represent a combination of spectacular Gruener Veltliner spice and the dark slate terroir minerality of Wachau.
