Roman Horvath is New Master of Wine - Roman Horvath is the second Austrian to achieve the coveted MW title.

The London-based international Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW), which for several decades has been offering the world-renowned qualification and title of Master of Wine (MW), has announced that Roman Horvath, the managing director of Domäne Wachau, has successfully completed the Institute’s extensive programme and achieved the prestigious MW title. Horvath is the second Austrian to achieve the MW title and become a member of the Institute. There are only 280 Masters of Wine worldwide.

The Master of Wine qualification requires a comprehensive knowledge of the international wine trade, which includes sales, distribution and marketing, as well as an extensive knowledge of the wines of the world.Dr. Josef Schuller MW, Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine – the first “non-British” Chairman in the IMW´s 56-year history – as well as managing director of the Austrian Wine Academy, says that “Roman´s success is fantastic, and now he has ‘broken the spell’” of Austria having just one native MW title-bearer. In 1998, Schuller became the first Austrian Master of Wine.“I am convinced that we will be congratulating even more MWs from the group of candidates from Central Europe at the Institute, “says Schuller. “And that the positioning of the Master of Wine qualification in these countries will be strengthened as well.”
