 –  Austria's favourite young wine brand - the "Junge Österreicher" (young Austrian wines) - joined forces with the "Junker" young wines from the Steiermark. The tasting, held in the MAK Museum of Contemporary Art on Wednesday 7 November 2012, marks the beginning of the 2012 vintage wine tasting season. Read more


 –  The 2012 vintage is bringing lovers of Austrian wine exciting, fruity and full-bodied wines. Beautiful weather conditions nurtured healthy and ripe grapes, even though the dry Summer heat created the need for plenty of attention later on in the cellar in order to ensure clean fermentation as well as fresh, pure aromatics and flavours. Also, the moderate acidity is requiring a certain sensitivity in the cellar in order to successfully bring out the spiciness together with the ripe fruit. Not only are the young wines triumphing with bigger fruitiness, but also many of the wines are showing excellent ageing potential. Read more


 –  Österreichische Post AG, the Austrian postal system, has introduced the first postage stamp of its special stamp series, “Austria's Wine Regions”. The series comprises stamps that highlight specific Austrian wine-growing regions, their landmarks and region-typical grape varieties; every year, a different stamp featuring a particular region will be printed and released. The Weinviertel region and the Grüner Veltliner grape variety serve as the motif of the first stamp, which was printed on October 19th, 2012. Read more

 –  The international Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW), based in London, has announced the names of the latest recipients of the Master of Wine (MW), the most prestigious title in the world wine sector. Amongst them is the first Austrian since 2009 to achieve this title - Andreas Wickhoff MW has joined the exclusive circle of 300 international wine experts who are qualified for the highly venerated acronym following their names.  –  Earlier this year, frosts and hailstorms caused millions of euros worth of damages. Josef Pleil, president of the Austrian Winegrowers' Association (Österreichischer Weinbauverband) and vice president of the Provincial Chamber of Agriculture of Lower Austria (Landwirtschaftskammer Niederösterreich) stated: “Because of the severe natural events, such as the Winter frost, the late frosts and massive hailstorms that occurred this year in all of the wine-growing areas, we are predicting that the harvest will yield a below-average volume - between 2 and 2.2 million hectoliters. In the vineyards that were unaffected by the natural disasters, grapes of especially high quality - based on the present state of vegetation - can be expected.” Read more
