Austria: Fourth Biggest Exhibitor at ProWein
The Austrian stand (F54 in Hall 11) provides a representative cross-section of the broad spectrum of the country's wine-growing industry. Young, up-and-coming winegrowers are represented along with internationally renowned vineyards and well-known wine co-operatives. From Grüner Veltliner to world-famous naturally sweet Prädikat wines and typical red-wine varieties (Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent) Austrian wine freaks will find everything their heart desires. A special computer databank at the stand makes it easy for visitors to find specific wines and their producers.
The strong presence of Austria's winegrowers at the ProWein is only logical. Germany is the most important export market for this up-and-coming wine-growing nation. In 1999, just over 8% of the total harvest (2.8 Mio. hectolitres) was exported to Germany, and wine export figures grew by 55.6%. This trend continued last year as well: by the end of June 2000, volume was up 28%.
Attractive Programme
Wine-tasting at the Austrian stand (F 54 in Hall 11) offers an attractive introduction to the world of Austrian wine. Between 10 AM and 1 PM daily, various varieties can be sampled. On Sunday (4 March) the tasting programme features Grüner Veltliner, on Monday (5 March) red wines, and on Tuesday (6 March) Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
The motto every afternoon at the eight-metre-long tasting counter is "Naturally Sweet Prädikat Wines". From 1 PM to 6 PM daily, the Austrian gourmet magazine Falstaff is presenting internationally renowned winegrowers and their finest wines, including Alois Kracher, Feiler-Artinger, Heidi Schröck, Angerhof Tschida, Gerhard Nekowitsch, Weinrieder and Helmut Lang.
