Wine Summit 2015 - Elite members of the international wine community visit Austria’s wine-growing regions
The top highlights of Austria’s diverse wine-growing regions
Visiting wine experts were provided with four various themed excursions: “Pannonian Highlights”, offering the destinations Burgenland and Carnuntum, “Blue Chips and Futures”, revolving around themes relevant to the region Niederösterreich, “Austria’s Hidden Gems”, a voyage of discovery through the Steiermark and the Thermenregion, and finally “Rise Like a Phoenix”, an introductory tour of the various Austrian wine-growing regions designed for newcomers. The Weingipfel offered our guests an opportunity to experience the distinguishing characteristics of each wine region up close and personally, and to encounter them via a comprehensive overview, since the numerous tastings and technical seminars were framed with visits to landmarks, historical attractions and museums - along with the chance to sample regionally typical cuisines and their specialties as part of the programme.
The tasting - Grüner Veltliner – an Anthology of Great Wines
The culminating highlight of the trip was a set tasting in flights dedicated to Austria’s marquee-player, the indigenous variety Grüner Veltliner, which took place in the dignified ambience of the Palais Niederösterreich. In arranging this exciting tasting event, Austria’s top sommeliers nominated series of the best Grüner Veltliners from various vintages and categories. And this top class dégustation – more than one hundred examples – richly and impressively documented the myriad facets as well as the great quality potential of the Grüner Veltliner.
The closing event – "Austrian Wine Party"
This year the traditional concluding party was orchestrated around the historical theme "1815’s Congress of Vienna – 200 Years On", held in the prestigious surroundings of the Palais Schönburg, where the Wine Marketing Board’s team spiced things up no little with their appearance in the costumes of the time.
