For the first time in Austria, two grape varieties characterize a profile of origin Traisental DAC: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling as Appellation Varieties

The Traisental, one of the smallest wine-growing areas in Austria, has begun to strengthen the strategic positioning of its wines by establishing - with the 2006 vintage – a typical wines of origin programme, and through marketing these wines under the Traisental dac designation. With these steps, the Traisental becomes the third member of Austria´s dac family. And for the first time in this country, two grapes varieties - Grüner Veltliner and Riesling – are characterizing one appellation.

Stronger origin-marketing along the Danube

The Traisental is the first wine-growing area in Austria to utilize two region-typical grape varieties for appellation marketing. Beginning with the 2006 vintage, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with their distinct taste profiles, will be featured under the denomination "Traisental dac". "The Traisental has become an outrider for stronger controlled denomination of origin (dac) marketing in the wine-growing areas along the Danube," says an enthusiastic Willi Klinger, the new managing director of the Austrian Wine Marketing Service in Vienna. Adds the head of the Traisental´s Regional Wine Committee, Johann Steyrer, who is also excited about the new appellation: "For us, it is important to intensify the profile of the Traisental, and to bring only the region-typical Veltliner and Riesling with this denomination of origin to the market."
The estimated annual production of Traisental dac wines is approximately 300,000 bottles, the majority of which will be sold directly from the wineries or at the traditional Austrian Buschenschanken wine taverns.

"Traisental dac" - typical Grüner Veltliner and Riesling

The requirements for wines to be designated as "Traisental dac" have been strictly and meticulously defined by the Traisental´s Regional Wine Committee. A region-typical Veltliner bearing the "Traisental dac Grüner Veltliner" designation is guaranteed as a fresh, fruity, spicy and dry wine with no notes of wood. And a bottle with the designation "Traisental dac Riesling" on its label guarantees that the wine is dry, aromatic and robust with a meaty and minerally character. Both varietal wines must have an alcohol content of between 12 % and 12. 5 %, and be released on the market no earlier than January of the year following the harvest.
