International opinions on Austrian wine

What does the future look like for Austrian wines? What matters to young consumers? How are climate change or trends such as alcohol-free or low-alcohol wines affecting the industry? Austrian Wine sat down with well-known personalities from the international wine scene to discuss these and other topics. The talks took place at unique locations, ranging from the elegant Salon Plafond at the MAK to the impressive vineyards of the Cobenzl winery.

Austrian wine is more than just a drink. It reflects the nature, the culture and the artisan methods of a country that has been known for producing exceptional wines for centuries. From the freshness and spiciness of Grüner Veltliner through to the elegance of the indigenous grape varieties, Austrian wine stands for diversity, quality and authenticity. But what is it that makes it so unique from an international perspective? What part does it play in the modern-day culture of enjoyment, and how is the industry preparing itself for the challenges of the future? In order to explore these questions in depth, Austrian Wine launched a video project entitled “International opinions on Austrian wine”.

A high-profile international project

Austrian Wine sat down with some of the leading experts from the wine world, including the master sommelier and journalist from Canada John Szabo; the Dutch journalist, wine author and expert on natural wines Simon J. Woolf; and the Norwegian sommelier and Star Wine List’s Ambassador Manager for Norway Liora Levi. Together with other international guests, they took part in a dynamic group discussion held at two locations in Vienna: in the elegant setting of the Salon Plafond in the MAK and in the picturesque vineyards of the Cobenzl winery with a breathtaking view over Austria’s capital city, renowned for its viticulture.

The discussion was hosted by the wine and culinary journalist Aleksandar Zecevic, who writes for the specialist journal Wine Enthusiast, among others. His extensive expert knowledge enriched the discussion.

The experts

“The fine texture and balanced acidity of Austrian white wines enhance culinary dishes by adding an extra component to the flavour.” Christina Rasmussen

A modern take on major issues in the wine world

Food pairing, modern wine styles and the environmentally conscious measures of Austrian winemakers – this project addresses a wide range of key questions. How can wine remain in line with the times? And how can it win the enthusiasm of new generations? An insightful but also humorous dialogue about tradition, innovation and the trends that will shape the future of Austrian wines. Viewers will be treated to informative answers, interesting insights and unusual perspectives.

“Austrian viticulture looks back over a long history that has laid the foundation for the current generation of winemakers. This new generation is characterised by a high level of motivation and is actively shaping the future of viticulture with its innovative spirit and fresh new initiatives.” Stefan Neumann

The environment and climate change

Austria is a country that places great importance on environmental protection and the responsible use of natural resources. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the country is recognised as a world leader in environmentally conscious viticulture.

“For me, Austria is a wine-growing country with a rich tradition. I am particularly impressed by the low-intervention movement, which demands minimal intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar, focusing on the authentic honesty that makes Austrian wines stand out.” Simon J. Woolf

Inspiration and information

The centrepiece of this project is a short film that addresses the major issues occupying the wine world. This is supplemented by video clips showing the highlights. The combination of knowledge transfer, authentic personalities and attractive staging makes this project a milestone in international wine communication, aimed at anyone who wants to learn more about the world of Austrian wine, from young generations with an interest in wine right through to experts from the wine industry. It is an invitation to explore the diversity and quality of Austrian wines from new perspectives and to think about where the road ahead is leading.

“Consumption of wine is falling across all generations, especially the younger ones. If they do choose to drink alcohol, then the quality of the product is an important factor. For the younger generation, quality is definitely more important than quantity.” Treve Ring

“I’m seeing a clear move towards wines with lower alcohol. Both in the retail and the gastronomy, demand for these types of wine has risen significantly in recent years.” Regina Van den Broek
