Austrian organic vineyards exceed 10,000 hectares for the first time ever

Austria continues to expand its pioneering role in environmentally conscious viticulture. The area under vine certified as organic has risen to 10,432 hectares, the equivalent of 15,000 football pitches or 24% of the total area under vine. Read more

VieVinum 2024

All eyes were on Vienna! Between 25 and 27 May 2024, 500 Austrian wineries exhibited their products in Vienna’s Hofburg, which welcomed more than 1,200 wine experts from 58 countries, making this year’s VieVinum a record-breaking event. Read more

ProWein 2024

From 10 to 12 March, Austrian Wine had its biggest international appearance of the year at ProWein in Düsseldorf. Wineries from all over Austria presented wines from all Austrian regions at the most important wine fair in Europe. Read more

The language of wine contains a wealth of meanings that are not all too familiar, particularly the technical interpretations. The glossary describes and offers an explanation to the most common terms.

press

Definition:

A piece of machinery used in the wine-making operation of crushing or pressing the grapes or must. Nowadays the gentle pneumatic presses are more widespread than, for example, the bladder presses. There is a small number of hydraulic horizontal presses in Austria, and the Torculum or Roman presses only have historical significance. The traditional basket presses and screw presses are seldom in Austrian viticulure.
