The Austrian wine industry put on its greatest show of the year at the ProWein in Düsseldorf, which ran from 19 to 21 March. Europe’s leading wine trade fair saw a total of 228 Austrian wineries presenting more than 3,000 wines from all of the country’s wine-growing regions. Thousands of wine specialists from around the world were able to extensively explore the diversity and quality of Austrian wines.

19 - 21 March 2023

9 am - 6 pm

Not only did the 228 wineries present the diversity of styles from Austria’s different wine-growing regions, but they also demonstrated the quality of recent vintages. The first wines from the well-balanced 2022 vintage were available for tasting alongside wines with a longer élevage from the outstanding 2021 vintage, as well as earlier wines, such as the those from the great 2019 vintage. Almost 90% of the wines on show were Qualitätswein.

The majority of wineries work certified sustainable, organic or biodynamic
Austria’s focus on environmentally conscious viticulture was also evident at the fair. Among the 228 participating wineries, 110 had been awarded the 'Sustainable Austria' certification, 54 were certified organic and 13 biodynamic. The wineries and their wines clearly reflected the Austrian wine industry’s commitment to the environment and the pioneering role Austria plays in this respect on the international stage.

Masterclasses and themed tastings very well-received
In addition to tastings on the winegrowers’ stands, 14 masterclasses and six themed tastings hosted by Austrian Wine gave wine specialists the chance to expand their knowledge on the country’s wines. Both the masterclasses, which were delivered by leading speakers, and the themed tastings, were very well-attended by international wine experts.

More than 500 attended a get-together to enjoy matured, rare wines
Another highlight of the fair was the social gathering with the Sommelier Union Deutschland on Monday evening, which attracted over 500 guests. Several of the wines available for tasting were rare mature Austrian wines that truly highlighted the potential of the country’s wines. The guests were impressed by the quality and variety of the wines presented.

Analysis already in progress
Throughout the three-day fair in Düsseldorf, the Austrian wine industry presented itself in the best possible light to the international audience of wine specialists. Austrian Wine has already begun analysing its trade fair presence in detail so that Austrian winegrowers and international trade visitors will also gain maximum benefit from ProWein 2024.

Themed tastings

After a long Corona break, the popular themed tastings found their place again at the ProWein stand of Austrian Wine. The tasting bar, which was open throughout, offered the opportunity to indipentently taste through changing wine themes. This area provided additional incentives for the international trade audience to establish business contacts with the 228 Austrian winegrowers present.
