Description

Heinrich Hartl’s winery is located in Oberwaltersdorf, a small country town just 25 km south from Vienna, Austria’s capital. The corresponding wine growing region is called “Thermenregion”. The region got its name from the thermal springs in the nearby cities of Baden and Bad Vöslau. It has a long lasting history in wine growing, which can be traced back to the roman legionnaires and french monks settling there about 2000 years ago.
For six generations now the Hartl family has been growing wine, slightly changing their business field from general farming on a regular basis to giving more and more importance to the vines and quality level of their produce.
About 20 hectares of vines are processed by the Hartls, 16 of them which are family owned and about 5 from contract growers (20 ha correspond to ca. 49 acres). The vineyards are located in and around Oberwaltersdorf, where soils are scanty, highly permeable and many stones can be found (hence the name “Steinfeld” for the vineyards) and on the famous slopes of Gumpoldskirchen and Pfaffstätten (loam-rich clay, sandy loam and brown earth with a high shell limestone content).
Heinrich Hartl III, who is currently in charge for the cellar, vineyards and export activities of the estate, was a student at the oldest winemaking school in the world, in Klosterneuburg. His internships at wineries in Austria and Italy have been supplemented by two vintages in New Zealand.
Heinrich is always eager to learn more about the secrets of nature and constantly tries to respect its needs. All the necessary measures of care for the vines, soil and the environment of the vineyards are tried to be done in compliance with the laws of nature. In order to gain the ripest grapes and the best quality possible, it is important to invest loads of time, love and passion. These must then be paired with respective knowhow, attention and equipment to obtain outstanding wines.
Heinrich Hartl’s wines are specifically determined by their origin and the local micro climate which can be compared to the conditions in the French Burgundy region (similar degree of latitude).
Regarding the portfolio of grape varieties a broad spectrum is offered to the clients. Nevertheless the main effort and brainwork is being done on Pinot Noir, St. Laurent and the Austrian variety Zweigelt.
Heinrich has never forgotten about the enormous potential embodied by the indigenous variety of Rotgipfler, a white vine with a slightly irritating name. The origin of the term is distinguished by the wine itself, the young shoot apexes and its leave veins’ colours range from a crispy pink to bloody red. Recent scores at international wine tastings show Heinrich’s ability to elaborate the particularities of this speciality, which only 100 ha of it existing worldwide, all of them in the Thermenregion.
The vines of these sorts are still quite young but though provide the Hartls with very promising grapes.
As a founding member of one of the leading co-operations of winemakers (burgundermacher) in the region a continuous exchange with colleges from Austria and abroad is very important to Heinrich. It enables him to constantly improve the quality of his wines and might show what the future will bring.
