Land Wine

The term 'Landwein' or land wines refers to wines produced from the authorised 35 classified quality wine varieties. The grapes have to derive from one of the three designated Austrian 'Weinland' or wine-growing areas for land wine production. These are Weinland, Steirerland or Bergland.

These three descriptions are officially protected geographical regions, according to EU legislation. The minimum must weight is 14° KMW and the maximum permitted yield is the same as quality wine, being set at 9,000 kg/ha (67.5 hl/ha). Land wines are not permitted to carry the red-white-red banderole and have no State control number.
