The 1998/99 Austrian Wine Salon
June 22, 1998 - It is established among the top producers those who may use the proud title of 1998/99 SALON Vintner. The AWM published the results of the final 1998 Salon Tasting in time for the VIEVINUM.
The 200 best wines
This year, too, 190 wines, ten sparkling wines, and ten distilled spirits have been selected to represent for an entire year the demanding quality set by Austria, the land on wine.
153 of the 200 Salon places were given in the so-called SALON End Tasting from 306 candidates: 246 from the regional awards, 40 from the brand-name associations, 20 through specialist magazines serving the gastronomy and the foodstuffs trade. The remaining places were awarded by Austrian specialist wine magazines (24), as well as by independent specialist journalists and sommeliers (23).
12 SALON winners
A final round will take place for every category (such as Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch, Eiswein-Strohwein etc.), in which the respective "Best of the Best" are to be chosen (see list).
12 from those selected
The specialist magazines, international and Austrian specialist journalists and sommeliers have given their nominations in the form of a ranking list. A comparative "Hit List" will be given disregarding the level of quality, variety and origin of the chosen twelve.
Shop window of Austrian wine culture
The "Austrian Wine SALON" is the largest annual show of achievement and thus the shop window of the indigenous wine business. It presents young and aspiring quality producers together with the reputable masters in wine growing, as well as the diversity and excellence of Austria's wine culture.
The 98/99 SALON Book
The previous two volumes of the SALON Book have already earned much praise. The 1998/99 edition was presented at the end of June. On the one hand this guide through the SALON gives an optimum overview of the wines to be tasted. And on the other, it offers compact information of Austria, the land of wine, and includes short portraits and addresses of the 200 SALON Vintners.
